The Public Works Department of the City of Boulder City manages all aspects of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for the City of Boulder City and provides development services for all private construction projects. We maintain top quality parks, streets, flood control facilities, buildings, water distribution system, sewer collection and treatment facilities.  In addition, the Public Works Department is responsible for managing numerous other City items, including the municipal cemetery, refuge collection and disposal, and many of the City’s agreements with local business operations such as gravel pits and power plants.   The Public Works Department professionally represents Boulder City at the Southern Nevada Water Authority meetings, Regional Transportation Commission meetings, and Flood Control District meetings.

Baaaaaaaad News

Recently the large population of bighorn sheep in Hemenway Park and around the Hemenway ballfields has created a serious problem.  Public Works crews mow the grass and then clean off the sidewalks, but the next day the surfaces will be covered in feces from the sheep.  The herd is simply too big.  I recently received a complaint from a bride who said that her group was intimidated by the sheep as the herd is reluctant to move and is not as wild as wild animals should be.

An even bigger concern is traffic on US 93.  Quite often cars pull on the shoulder and stop to take pictures.  Occasionally cars slow down in the travel lane for pictures and this could result in serious crashes and even fatalities.  My staff called animal control on September 16th as the herd was heading toward the pavement.  When I visited the park to review the construction project on the 17th the Boulder City Police Department had a presence that day too.

I consider myself an outdoorsman and visit several National Parks each year to hike and explore.  I love wildlife.  I think it is great that we have bighorn sheep in our community, but I feel that 5-10 is reasonable.  This herd has been estimated at over 100 animals.

Boulder City has sent a letter to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) requesting herd reduction.   Until then, we ask motorists and pedestrian visitors to this area to exercise caution.

Good News

The turf removal project at Hemenway Park is progressing marvelously.  The City is already enjoying water savings and soon this area will be re-landscaped.
